A FAWLTY Towers theme night held in Lutterworth saw confused diners being led out of the restaurant and into the Town Hall in a comic twist to the evening.
About 90 people filled the Old Bakehouse restaurant, in Bitteswell Road, which can seat only 25, expecting to dine there but when Basil –played by Kings Way caterers head chef Geoff Sykes – said there was a fire in the kitchen they all had to leave.
In the planned sketch on Friday, Basil led the diners across the road and into the Town Hall where a room was beautifully decorated and tables set out.
Carol Scholes, of Riverside, was there with nine other friends. She said: “It was absolutely amazing. We heard Basil banging around in the kitchen as he would do and then he came running out and we had to follow him.
“It was a fantastic night and so funny. I can’t wait for the next one.”
The night included a three-course meal and entertainment from characters from the cult 1970s TV show, played by Kings Way catering staff and family members.
Caroline Watts, secretary of the Old Bakehouse, said: “It was an hilarious evening and everyone enjoyed. Some people even thought the characters were professional actors.
“We had a thank-you letter on the Saturday and they suggested we do ’Allo ’Allo or Dad’s Army next time. We’ve already got names and numbers on the books for the next theme night.”
